As a young, impatient, freshly minted Alexander Technique student, I asked Frank Pierce Jones how I could learn the Technique faster. His answer: become a teacher. 'But don't I have to know the Technique before I can teach it to a student?', I asked. 'Yes', he said, 'but you’ll also teach it to each other.'
In this workshop we will take a look at how teaching and learning in the Alexander Technique are really two sides of the same process, especially when it comes to teaching a group of people. We'll explore topics such as:
- the unified field of awareness
- non-sensory perception
- 'taking a gambling chance'
- conscious and unconscious control
- magnanimous selfishness
- reversing your senses
- learning vs. knowing
- the creative process in performance
I hope to share with you some of the things I've learned from Frank Jones, Marjorie Barstow and my students.
