musical direction: an irish music tune learning session
with gilles rullmann
monday aug 10, 14:00 - 16:00
venue: IW1-052, Irish World Academy Building (level 1)
Irish music makes you want to tap your foot and dance – a great illustration of 'every thought leads directly to muscle'. Irish traditional music tends to combine melancholic sadness with the expression of pure joy. In its long history the people playing it have been able to express themselves and their culture. It joins together players and listeners alike. It has that great magical lift to it. But above all – it’s great fun!
While we're in Ireland, join us for a tune learning session – whether you have an instrument with you or not, your voice will do just fine too. Learning an Irish tune by ear is a great way to come to music from the 'all together, one after the other': if we inhibit the immediate desire to know all the notes we can just allow the music to seep in. This way the whole musicality, the joy and the life of the tune automatically comes with it. The wishing of the melody, rather than the willing of the notes, will carry the music. This way of learning music tends to liberate us of 'having to study' and can serve as an inspiration in music education of any instrument or style. So, come take home an Irish tune from your visit to Limerick!
