This workshop (the first of three) offers a theoretical and practical introduction to the concept of conscious control, the highest development of the executive functions in charge of programming, controlling, and verifying our activity. Conscious activity is not inherited at birth, it is taught and developed by the social group to which the individual belongs. The concept of conscious control will be explained relatively to FM Alexander’s writings in opposition to ‘subconscious control’ and also in relation with the modern scientific literature from motor control and motor development of higher mental functions. The presentation will include theoretical exploration as well as hints at practical procedures. Examples will be drawn from my experiences teaching children with executive functions deficits, such as Epilepsy, Attention Deficit with Hyperactive disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder, and also teaching ordinary pupils. Inspired by these theories, the Alexander Technique teacher will play a leading role in the future to empower individuals, to teach them how to improve their executive direction in everyday action, thought, reasoning and other forms of complex cognition.
