brain, body and touch

sarah barker, presenting at the Alexander Technique Congress 2015

with sarah barker
monday aug 10, 14:00 - 16:00
venue: IW2-042, Irish World Academy Building (level 2)

Sarah Barker will lead participants in exploring the teacher/student relationship through touch. She will present concepts and insights she has discovered in her research in balance measurement and in brain activity related to touch. The session will explore concepts such as grid cells and peripersonal space, joint action, expanded body mandalas, and postural sway incorporation. They can provide a new sense of the building blocks of touch communication that underlie the specialized touch of the Alexander Teacher. By heightening our experience and awareness of these ideas we can increase our sensitivity and power in touch. The quality of touch coupled with focused attention and awareness in both teacher and student can transform one’s quality of being and moving.
Guided by Sarah, participants will work with each other to experiment with and clarify their use of hands. We will explore together, deepen our appreciation of touch and proprioceptive re-education and share insights and understanding.
Everyone is welcome: the greater the range of experience in the group the richer will be our discoveries.
